What effect do fireworks have on the environment?

As I sat watching the incredible fireworks by the Mississippi River last night I couldn't help but notice all the smoke...so does this have some big nasty effect on the ozone layer or make the air of a poorer quality on any significant scale? It seems hard to beleive it wouldn't have some effect.
